The Beauty of Arborguy

09 Jan

Arborguy is an important additional facility provided for the maintenance of the urban tree. It keeps the tree in position. It is also advantageous in that it does not cause any destruction of the tree roots. The good thing about some companies is that the material used to make Arbor guy is variable. The materials used can be plastic or metal. It is more advantageous to use one that is made out of plastic to hold the tree in position than one made out of metal. This is because a plastic Arbor guy is more economical to buy than a metal Arbor guy. The plastic Arbor guy is also easier to transport because it is lighter than the Arbor guy made out of metal. Depending on the quality of metal used, the Arbor guy varies in price and durability. The Arbor guy made out of metal that does not rust will be more expensive.

I Attribute My Healthy Overall Feeling to a Home Aquaponics Kit

03 Dec

I am living a much healthier life ever since I turned 50 years old. I gave up smoking, I stopped gambling, and I even stopped consuming refined sugars and caffeine. I feel like I did when I was 30, and I am hoping that I can keep kicking off the rust and the years that have accumulated. When I was in my teens, I remember having a recurring dream that I would never live to be 30 years old. It is actually more of a nightmare, but thankfully I have been able to successfully turn around my mind. I attribute a great part of my success in the turn around to my having started eating healthier. I got one of those home aquaponics kits about 6 years ago, and started growing my own organic fruit and vegetables. I have had melons, squash, zucchini, and fresh tomatoes on my dinner table ever since.

The Green Soldier Bugs

27 Oct

Another famous kind of stink bug is the Acrosternum hilare, or as what they are commonly called, the green stink bugs. Also originating from Asian countries such as Japan and China, they are alternatively called as “Asian Stink Bugs”. Like the BMSB, they also have stink glands, sucking mouthparts, and broad bodies. Both green Stink Bugs, and BMSB are pest insects invading mostly South America. Obviously, they are differentiated according to their color. While brown stink bugs are brown in color as their name implies, green stink bugs on the other hand are bright green in color. Adult green stink bugs also have an orange lining separating their heads from their bodies. But like the BMSB, they are also black in color as nymphs and eventually transform into green-colored insects while developing their defensive shields on their broad bodies. Their major hosts include tree fruit, bean, alfalfa, cotton, rice, soybeans, and tomatoes. They are also found feeding on vegetables such as corn, cabbage, cucumber, and several more. Also they feed on fruits such as apples, apricots, cherries, grapes, oranges, strawberries and several more.

What Can You Use a Wood Chipper For?

28 Sep

I think I am definitely going to have a wood chipper to my Christmas list this year. I mean, it is really an awesome tool. If I actually had trees on my property, I could find multiple uses for it. I could use it to make free mulch. I can use it to get rid of yard debris and do leaf cleanup. I could even use it to make bark chips for my kids to play in. There are lots of advantages to owning a wood chipper.

However, owning a wood chipper can be very expensive. Most of the time a good quality wood chipper is going to cost you over $1000. You can save money by renting instead of owning. You can typically get a wood chipper rental for under $100. I think that this is a great idea especially if you are just using it for home projects and for doing work around your house.

We Looked into Installing Artificial Grass at Our Home

31 Jul

I looked into installing artificial grass based on something my dad said when I was a kid. He was frustrated with trying to maintain our big yard after he retired. There was a never ending onslaught of weeds and brown spots. He said one day that he was going to pave the yard and paint it green. I thought it was funny at the time. I knew he was just voicing frustration. Then artificial turf began to be used in sports stadiums. The turf has come a long way over the years. You can now have it at home and it looks so real. It does not look anything like what dad had in mind. Kids can play on it and not wear it out. Your dog can even do his business on it and not turn it brown from the chemicals in his urine. Yes, he can even do the other thing dogs are famous for without a problem. When he is not using it for a bathroom facility, your dog can run and jump and roll around on it all he wants. It looks real and the best thing is that is doesn’t need to be mowed.

Pond Algae Control is Important to the Beauty of the Pond

28 Jul

Ponds are an excellent way to accent any landscape, their beauty adds to just about any landscaping style a homeowner has chosen as their theme. Many people enjoy adding Koi fish and other decorative fish, along with adding fish the pond owner can choose from many beautiful and exotic water garden plants as well. There is one problem with ponds that all owners face however, and that is algae. Pond algae control is perhaps the only downside to owning a pond.

There are many natural methods of controlling algae, along with chemical methods. Many people have found that by doing some research online they can find methods that seem strange, but after trying them they discover these methods help control algae growth. One of these strange methods is to add plants to the pond, by adding plants the sun is unable to reach the areas under the plants. The sun shining in a pond is the number one source of algae growth to begin with, by limiting its access, pond owners find that pond algae control is not as difficult.

Along with adding plants as a type of sunscreen, some fish can play an important part in keeping algae to a minimum. The fish most commonly used are called Plecostomus, these fish live on algae and constantly are eating it off the sides of the pond, rocks and any other items in the pond that have algae growth on them. These fish are naturally non aggressive so they are fine to add along with most other types of fish.

Another method to assist in the battle of algae control is to use one of many natural algae control additives that eliminate and control future growth. These additives can be found in nearly any home and garden store, including those online. There are many great online water garden stores that sell these products that can be ordered and shipped directly to the home. Many people try to keep the products they use for gardening as organic as possible, this is a great idea and is better for the environment as well as the fish that call the pond home.

Though there are many natural products on the market, some people prefer a quick fix, however, the products used to eliminate algae instantly, or rather overnight, may have harsh chemicals in them and should be used sparingly and with a pond algae control program such as adding the fish and plants. Keeping the plant debris to a minimum can help also. The most important thing is keeping the pond clean and beautiful, so methods may need to be combined and alternated to achieve the best results.

On Making My Home Feel More Comfortable

05 May

Last year my husband and I purchased a house from a darling old couple on a small island in the tropics. It was a beautiful house to look at with a lovely gazebo in the garden , and living in it was nice at first; however; when we settled in, we realized that there were a few problems in the house. The air was very stuffy and the rooms in the house were very hot. Opening the windows did not help since the house was built in such a way that the windows did not trap the breeze that was abundant in the back yard. Since we cannot relocate the windows, we plan on installing smaller sliding windows at the top of the walls so that breeze can enter the house when the windows are open and refresh the air inside. In addition to this, we plan on installing air conditioning units in the main rooms of the house, namely the bedrooms and the living and dining rooms, so that when the temperatures are soaring outside, we can be comfortable inside. The air conditioning job would take some doing though, because the wiring in the house will need to be replaced as it is old and incapable of supporting the electrical load that we are going to put on it. We have spoken to a few contractors to do the job since we don’t have the time or expertise to do it ourselves, and we finally got someone to do it for us at a cost of approximately seventy-five thousand dollars in local currency. It may sound like a lot, but it’s worth it, especially since we will be expecting our first child in about six months.

Weighing on the Right Tick Control Program or Treatment for Your Pets

29 Apr

Ticks and fleas are harmful insects that are very hard to control. It feeds blood on pets and humans, and can bring serious and life-threatening diseases. If you are concern about the welfare of your pets and your family, you need to think of a tick control program that would work best for your pets.

The first thing to consider when thinking about a certain tick control program for your pet is its medical and physical condition. Once you’ve already sort that out, you could start thinking identifying what type of program your pet needs, whether a flea and tick control prevention program, an outdoor tick control program or a prevention plan. The best type though is a combination of those mentioned, a flea and tick control prevention and treatment. It is a type of program that eliminates possibilities of getting pests in your home, or it could drive pests away if they discover that your place is a dangerous place for them to be on.

A preventive tick control program for your pet could repel ticks and fleas from getting into your pet. If there are, it will also stop the growth of pests. Most of all, a prevention program will kill larvae and eggs. These three functions are very essential in stopping the life cycle of fleas and ticks.

A treatment plan on the other hand is the best program to kill adult fleas and ticks. Your pet could be as precious as your family, so once it’s already infested, you would really find and immediate remedy to treat the pet. A treatment plan is your best solution to scenarios like this. A treatment and prevention program may be quite similar, but the differences lie on the formulations of the products which are specifically manufactured to be used at different times of the fleas and ticks’ life cycle.

The Importance of Proper Natural Lawn Care

28 Mar

A lot of homeowners spends hundreds of even thousands of dollars to make their home look good. They put in new floor tiles, paint the walls with new colors, buy new furniture or even change the layout of their home. But many neglects one of the most important part of any home – their lawns.

You might think that organic lawn care isn’t really that important, but the truth is many will judge how your house looks like from the outside. That means your lawn will be one of the first thing they see and judge on. A clean lawn shows that the owner have put a lot into their yard care, and projects a clean and enjoyable home. After all, messy lawns are usually associated with abandoned and dirty houses.

Lawn care might sound like a lot of work, but in actual fact is really simple. The most basic lawn care you can do is to make sure the grass do not grow too long. You can easily mow the lawn once a week or once every two weeks, depending on how fast the grass grows. You can even hire someone to do it for you cheaply.

If you’re living in a hot and dry area, you might need to water your lawn once every few days or the grass will start dying. While you may not want grass to grow too long, it’s always nice to have lush, green grass covering your lawns. Not to mention, the greenery is good to help your eyes and mind relax.

You can also section off a part of your lawn to be turned into a mini garden to plant flowers or even fruits and vegetable. Be warned though, it does take considerable time and effort to take care of, so unless you have plenty of time to spare, it may be better off to just go without them.

Aquatic Plants: the Basics of Planting in Backyard Ponds

11 Mar

Aquatic plants are essential ingredients of backyard ponds. No water garden is complete without them. However, certain things must be considered to make sure you provide a favorable environment for these plants to grow. Here are some of the basics you need to know about planting pond plants.

First when selecting how many plants to put inside the pond, consider the size of the pond. Do not place too many floating plants so that you can’t see any of the water surface. Yes you want most of the surface covered. But 100% coverage is not what you are shooting for.

Two, the number of plants must be proportionate to your pond size.

Three, if you have fish be sure to get some oxygenating plants to create an additional source of oxygen. Oxygenating plants are usually submerged into the water.

Fourth, soften your pond’s edges with marginal plants. This will create a natural setting for it. These plants should be planted on very moist or wet soil. Other marginal plants would also need to be planted in shallow areas.

Five, you can use baskets or terra cotta pots, or buckets to hold the soil for your water plants. Plastic planting pots may also be used. To prevent fish like koi from burrowing into the soil, cover the dirt with gravel or pebbles.

Pond Building Tip: When using rigid pond liners, turn yours upside down on the spot you want to build your water feature. Spray paint around the outline leaving an extra six inches around the physical dimension of the liner. This will give you the excavation area to dig out. Stick the liner in to the hole as you go to test how you’re doing and so you can adjust your fit. Once you’ve got it dug take off a couple more inches off the bottom and back fill with builders sand. Tamp that into place. Put your liner in and back fill around it making sure to keep it level.

Take care to plant the right aquatic plants right and they should thrive for a long time to come.

Renting Lawn Equipment

26 Feb

If you’re going to choose between renting or buying a manual sod cutter and post hole digger, I recommend you to rent sod cutter. It is use in large or heavy jobs. A post hole digger has 4 wheels and several blades, and it looks a lot like a clipper mower. It offers more precision than that manual sod cutter; it will make the task finish easily with only a short period of time. There are also some accessories for an auger rental (post hole digger) that can make the job much easier.

There are some things to consider whether you choose to buy or rent sod cutter. First you have to consider the operating controls. Especially if you’re going to buy a post hole digger you have to consider the operating controls, you have to make sure that it is easier to use and you can easily adjust it. Next to consider the transportation. A post hole digger are large and it is difficult to bring from one place to another. If you’re project oblige sod cutting in several places, it’s better for you to rent a lightweight post hole digger or small utility that can make the shipping easily and if you have a specific project that will only take for several days to finish. So if you rent sod cutter or post hole digger you should try it immediately to your garden to know if it is working, but be sure that you should read the instruction before you use it. For safety precautions there are some things you should consider. You need to wear gloves; protective goggles and protective gear wear for your safety. If you’re going to rent sod cutter its cost is $80 to $90 per day while if you’re going to buy, it is worth about $ 1,200.

Get Rid of Those Pesky Dandelions

08 Jan

After you have planted your grass seed, how do you rid your lawn and garden of those pesky dandelions? Most gardening landscaping professionals will agree that dandelions in your grass lawns or gardens detract from the beauty that you are striving for. But how do you get rid of them from the grass seed areas?

We usually attempt to dig them out of our grass seed lawns, but because dandelion roots are very deep – sometimes as deep as 3′, the root is often left behind under the grass seed! The remaining root will then grow into two plants! So digging dandelions out is often not helpful when gardening or landscaping.

There is a simple solution to having your grass lawn looking beautiful again. White vinegar! That’s correct. Simple household, kitchen vinegar will kill dandelions. But it will also kill other plants and lawn, so you must use it with care.

To be effective, white vinegar must be used at full strength, avoiding the grass lawn. Gardening landscaping professionals recommend that you invest in an inexpensive garden sprayer. The kind that you pump manually to achieve pressure. Then hold the nozzle at the base of each dandelion plant. Try not to contaminate the surrounding grass seed, so it doesn’t also die.

The dandelions will soon dry up and your grass seed lawn will fill in the spot. Be careful as well not to spray the vinegar near other plants, especially perennials, as you will also lose them.

A simple, inexpensive and non-toxic solution that works.

Benefits of Using Push Lawn Sweeper

29 Dec

Cleaning up the yard of leaves is a simple but tiring task. It is not very hard to do but it becomes grueling if you have to keep repeating it. Using a rake to gather leaves is the old-fashioned way to clean up the backyard. Another way is to use a leaf blower wherein large amounts of leaves can be moved in a small amount of time. But with this method, you still have to place the leaves in a bag before they can be thrown away. The easiest way to clear the yard of leaves as well as to cut grass is with the use of a push lawn sweeper. This mechanical device does not need gasoline to operate unlike lawn mowers, so you can save up on costs. And because they have no engine, they don’t create a disturbing noise while being used. Moreover, they are light so it takes little effort to push them around. Maintaining your yard is now easy and quick with the help of this sweeper.

Cobra Plant or California Pitcher

11 Dec

A unique plant that can be adopted to house culture is the native plant of California and Oregon, Darlingtonia californica, better known as the Cobra Plant or Calfornia Pitcher Plant. The names fit the plant very well. There are tubular leaves with an arched hoed marked with translucent areas which admit light into the interior. So suggested a Cobra Snake.

The leaves are 3 to 30 inches long, and are modified into a pitcher-shape. The fused half of the leaves forming a lid decorated with an attractive crimson and green tongue-like appendage. The leaves are fascinatingly colored and are hollow. The inside of the pitchers are lined with fine hairs and homey glands. The insects are lured within and are drowned within the secretion of liquid at the hollow base. The victim once drowned gradually decays and is finally absorbed by the plant. This plant is also known as a “carnivorous”, “meat eating” subject. It is said if there are not enough insects in your home that the plant should be fed a small piece of ground meat once a week. This is supposed to be fed through small opening, known as the mouth of the snake. It seems ours must get enough insects because we have never fed them meat and they are thriving nicely.

These plants grow wild in mountain swamps in a section of California and a southern section of Oregon. They are scarcely known in cultivation, although you will find a few now and then at a few specialty nurseries. These plants grow in bogs and other wet places and have scanty roots and must be kept in a moist atmosphere. A soil of fern fibre, silver sand, and chopped sphagnum moss is an ideal potting soil and will retain moisture. They must never be left to dry out and to prevent this the pot they are planted in should be set in another pot or container considerably larger, This larger container should have damp sphagnum moss between the space on the sides and on the bottom. This will keep the moist atmosphere around the roots that they require. This is also a very good way to grow house ferns, as they like moisture around their roots, The plants should be kept shaded, no sunlight or bright light. Never use any kind of lawn fertilizer or other type of fertilizer on them.

There are yellowish to brownish-red flowers on a stem 2 feet long. The flowers are about 1-1/4 inches in diameter. Blooming season is from May to July.

These plants are not hard to grow if given a little care, planted correctly, and kept moist. They are very novel and unique and draw a great deal of attention. A well grown plant is an odd picture, looking every bit like a pot of Cobra snakes with their heads protruding in the air.
