Reviewing Distortion in Your Amp

I’ve only recently become a fan of distortion pedals. Why? Because I finally understand them a little better. I used to plug in any distortion pedal, anywhere on my rig, and just got noise from my Fender Twin 12″ speaker amp. It’s a ’65 reissue, and frankly, never was designed to have distortion.

The amp you use (if it doesn’t have distortion built in) is very important to your distortion pedal, and vice versa.

After a while of testing I found that an overdrive pedal is better than a traditional distortion pedal. What does that mean? The overdrive is a pedal that tries to create natural distortion from a speaker that is turned up too loud. The ohms and tubes are pushed too hard, and you get a creamy distortion as a result. The flat-out fuzzy distortion pedal on the other hand is an actual layer of color that’s put on top of the signal. It gives you two different kind of distortion which may at first sound the same.

Waiting for Crossover Success

The Mary Jane Girls created by Rick James had trouble making the pop charts even though they were able to score hits on the R&B and Dance charts.

They did however finally manage to have a pop hit with their song “In My House”. Like many of their best 80s songs it was deemed to have naughty suggestions though in interviews the group have said the song is about love. It is about a woman saying she is available anytime to her man “in my house”. The video had the girls in skimpy outfits however this was a part of their image in many of their performances.

When the song was released in 1985 it reached number 7 on the Billboard pop charts giving them their only hit on the pop chart. As usual they fared even better on the R&B/ Hip-Hop charts where the song hit number 3 and on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart where it became the number 1 song.

If there was a time in my life I wished that the earth could swallow me was when my next door neighbor thought that he had the best rock band in town but he was nothing near music. Okay, this was the deal my neighbor was of the notion that as long as he got all the “right” people drumming for him and playing the bass guitars he was the next best thing that was yet to be discovered in the world. We Will Make a Band

My friends and I decided to form a band. This is a long-term plan of course. None of us can play an instrument yet, but we vowed to each learn one so we could become famous. I need to find someone to give be bass guitar lessons. I’m surprised no one else wanted it. We all picked out which instrument we were going to learn. A couple of the guys fought over the drums, but it got worked out. I’ve always liked the bass. Its not as stressful as the others. You just get to stand over to the side and look cool the whole time while everyone else flips out. You get to hit the really low notes too that you feel in your gut. Its going to be awesome when we can pull it together. One of the guys has even already started working on lyrics for our first song.
